The Challenge

Haines, Alaska, offers some of the most inspiring wilderness in the region, yet it lacked a formal public-use backcountry cabin and maintained public private partnership trails to support year-round access. To bridge this gap, a dedicated group of volunteers envisioned a nonprofit that could foster wilderness experiences while promoting community health and the local economy. The challenge was to transform this volunteer-led passion project into a legitimate, permitted, and sustainable organization.

This project represents a unique intersection of my professional expertise and personal passion. I volunteered my leadership for over six years, working alongside close friends to build the organization from the ground up through several key phases:

Phase 1: Nonprofit Development & Board Recruitment

My dear friend and I took the lead in transforming a conceptual idea into a formal 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

  • Strategic Growth: We co-facilitated a group of dedicated volunteers over a six-year period to establish the mission, vision, legal and operational structure of HHT.
  • Team Building: We played a central role in recruiting and mentoring board members, ensuring the organization had the diverse skill sets needed to manage complex recreational infrastructure.

Phase 2: Navigating the Permitting Process

Securing the necessary permissions to build on public lands required high-level technical navigation of state and local regulatory frameworks.

  • The Tukga Hut Permit: I led the effort to secure the first-ever permit for the Tukga Hut, a milestone that paved the way for the organization’s first public-use cabin.
  • Agency Coordination: I acted as the primary liaison between the volunteer group and land management agencies to ensure the proposed infrastructure met all environmental and safety requirements.

Phase 3: Facilitation & Public Compromise

Building backcountry infrastructure often involves balancing the interests of various stakeholders.

  • Finding Middle Ground: I utilized my facilitation skills to lead public outreach efforts, navigating sensitive conversations and finding compromise between the nonprofit’s goals and public concerns.
  • Consensus Building: I ensured that the development of cabins and trails was inclusive and enjoyed broad community support, helping to solidify HHT’s place as a vital part of the Haines quality of life.
